Being a Teacher

Kerry Owen, Teacher at Windsor Clive Primary School, Cardiff

Primary Science paves the wave for our scientists and I try to make sure it runs through every part of our school day. Allowing the children to explore is key and the more 'oh wow!' you get the better! Science is so fun and versatile. The pupils always love to investigate and the vocabulary that different experiments generates is always varied.

I love teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in primary school. It sets the tone for questioning, exploring and problem solving. Children are naturally fantastic problem solvers and STEM subjects are great to help nurture this.

I have been teaching in primary schools for 20 years. As a teacher I try to work with STEM Ambassadors as much as possible, they provide our children with real world science experiences. I have teamed up with different Cardiff Metropolitan University with Exercise Science PhD students for a number of years to support their research and give the pupils laboratory experience.

After school clubs are great for supporting our younger pupils with their science and nurturing our older pupils’ science leader skills.

I have been teaching the youngest members of primary school most recently and we do alot of singing - it helps so much with memory and keeping things fun. I even get the opportunity to whip out my ukelele and help the children present our Science investigations as songs and stories (with a nod to all of those Science communicators out there).
